Well, I think that similarly, for bloggers, we go through a range of needs or reasons why we blog.
The Daily Stat, by Harvard Daily Publishing, recently released results of a poll which conform my thinking.
The study is on 'Who do Bloggers Blog For?' and the results are below.

My thinking is that most people start blogging experimentally on personal interests. I started with a travel blog and then I started this blog, with the first post being a direct extension from the travel blog.
As you can see the content on this site has gradually moved from sporadic thoughts to a greater concentration on marketing and public relations issues, with specific focus on web 2.0 communications in most instances.
Earlier this year I did my first paid blogger stint and I must say it was intriguing!
Prior to that I have "blogged" for my company but mostly through Facebook or doing damage control by posting comments to posts that could be either damaging or misleading.
I believe that because of this natural progressive evolution from a private random poster to a targeted reputation 2.0 managers and all in between, I'm more confident as a blogger and would recommend that path to anyone interested in becoming a blogger.
Happy blogging! Oh and feel free to share your blog with my readership in your comments!
Cheers!
