I heard this week that Facebook had outpaced Myspace with the most members for social media network. I will admit that I am one of those persons who log into Facebook "several times a day" as one advertiser recently stated on air.I don't however, check my social media resume or the visitor stats as often, nor do I check on all of the social media pages we manage every day.
I even haven't been able to achieve my target of blogging everyday.
So why does Facebook get my attention so? Many applications, one location.
The reality is that real people with real jobs and real responsibilities haven't got the time to check on all of these different apps and Facebook just makes it convenient to do all of the fun stuff in one location in between the moments when you can get away from the 'real world'.
I'm not dissing the other apps by any means. I actually think it is cool how people like Rick Sanchez on CNN flit from twitter to Facebook to Myspace to their blog during their shows.
However, I'm willing to stick my neck out on a limb and say to those who want to use social media in your marketing mix that it's ok not to master or even use ALL of the apps. It's not possible if you still want have a life! Also, after a while, it tends to get (boring)... except for the occasional world wide rave of course.
It is critical to get social media though, in terms of how it works and doesn't work. Listen into as many forums as you can through tools such as google alerts but don't feel pressured to participate in them all. Choose wisely and focus on the ones that make the most sense for your brand.
Are you growing more and more tempted to leave your blackberry at home? Do you only log in at night now rather than during the day as well? Forgot your password lately? Step into my office!
I'd love to hear from those of you who are like myself and nearing Burnout 2.0.
